On the fence to rejoin Toastmasters

⚡ Quick Answer

This guide covers on the fence to rejoin toastmasters with practical tips and strategies.

🎯 Key Takeaways

  1. Master the fundamentals - Learn the core principles
  2. Practice consistently - Regular practice improves skills
  3. Apply techniques - Put learning into action

As the title suggests, I have been in Singapore Toastmasters before back before COVID, and I did shortly leave after a year. 7 years in now and contemplating to try again with a different goal in mind.

What is putting me on the fence because each club is self hosted usually, so for the club I went at least theres alot of emphasis in forcing people into the officer roles, or else its quite evident the club would not last after. In 2018 I was a teenager, and as I took more roles and get more involved I felt really uncomfortable when more bigger responsibilities are placed as the leaders could not find people, and was common for one to hold 2 officer roles. I had twice where I was pulled in for a free lunch to persuade me to continue TM and take bigger roles. I was a low self esteemed individual back then and took as much as I can (so yes not all fault is on the club). I will have to say from my internal experience, i did not feel supported and manipulated still, idk if this is common in most clubs or not. I had another reason of leaving then but is not relevant. leaving Toastmasters was tough but needed choice for me back then

I have grown quite abit since, and the painpoint relating to the leadership roles is that I do have 2 jobs now, and I can be sure to put time to do speeches but I dont think I have capacity for leadership roles. I want to be here to learn, and if talking about leadership I am already practicing on the job, the last thing I want to do is taking time away from that learning process and deal with politics in the club.

I hope maybe you guys can persuade me this is not the norm in SG TM, what options I can voice as a member, and if this is the norm, I hope I can be recommended other resources that can still help me learn.

Thank you!

:edit: adding 1 more to my decision: yes i am planning to go to another club than the one I went before. want to start fresh and in a new environment
